About Me

Maximilian O’Neil (b. 2000  Baltimore) is a painter working out of Baltimore, Maryland. He was raised in Monkton, a rural part of Northern Baltimore County. His passion for art was sparked at a young age when he was introduced to drawing by his grandfather. After dropping out of college due to struggles with his mental health, he re-enrolled a year later at Towson University in 2019. Following his freshman year, he transferred to Maryland Institute College of Art. He graduated, receiving his BFA in Painting, in 2023. He has shown his work in multiple group exhibitions in galleries at MICA. He has experimented with many processes, subjects, and ideas – from abstractions based on medical and scientific images (specifically relating to Type 1 Diabetes and Stargardt’s Macular Dystrophy, both of which are chronic illnesses he has) to his current body of work consisting of highly realized interiors. Though his approach has changed many times, the connection between mental and physical health is an exploration that has persisted throughout. His shift to highly realized representational paintings from pure abstraction was done in response to the progression of the aforementioned Stargardt’s Macular Dystrophy. Stargardt’s is a degenerative eye disease that causes the loss of the eye’s central vision. His shift to highly realized representational work is an attempt to take full advantage of his vision as the disease progresses.
